The Real Surge

AP Photo Samir Mizban

I’ll keep this one brief. Here’s another story out of Italy about arms traders doing their thing in Iraq possibly with and possibly without the Americans knowing about it.

This article mentions that the Iraqis are converting over to the use of M16’s instead of AK47s. So we have former Soviet bloc weapons, arms dealers, the MAFIA, Bosnia all jumbled together in this one. One figure that jumps out is the 750,000 AK47s intended for the Iraqi police. Either that’s a lot of spares or there’s an awfully big party in the works.

Plowshares and laptops. In some generation we grok that weapons only enrich the Plutocrats.

Something very odd is going on here. Why are they working so hard to hide arms sales to the Iraqi army and police?

In the meantime, as you imply someone's getting very rich off these deals.

GOP activist's blog bolsters budget holdouts

its about the budget stalement in CA. How a conservative blogger is holding them together.. and in a way, taking everybody hostage.

THanks for the link PL, it's an interesting story. All this talk about bloggers on the left claiming too much influence etc....And there's this guy who Republican legislators are relying on for budget information, etc.
It's sort of a political blogger's dream.....it's just that he's conservative.
On the other hand, I'm not sure I'd personally want to spend a lot of time following state budget minutia. Purely personal preference of course....

Do you know Greg Palast's book, Armed Madhouse? I'm just reading it now. Loads of revelations, and I thought I was fairly well informed on Iraq, Katrina and a number of his other subjects.

I've heard of it, but I haven't read it. I'll keep an eye out for it.

I'm still amazed at the number of crazy stories that actually do hit the news that virtually no one seems to notice. The GAO report was pretty disturbing. It suggests strongly that the Departmnt of Defense was simply incompetent.
