Hello Marko! I loved these stories! I love the idea of a collection about "inventing China" - that is so cool, sort of the opposite of the Ha Jin collection I read - and I thought of his story about, what was it, ungrateful children? Those kids were awful thought!
I have to ask a stupid question (it is all I am capable of I fear!) - here, Chinese restaurants call it General Tso Chicken (I love it, btw, it is my go-to dish!) but is that the same thing as General Mo? Or am I confused again? Like the fortune cookie!
Zin,
thanks for reading the story. I love Ha Jin's fiction btw.
General Mo's chicken is a made up dish. I wanted to avoid the whole business of people looking up General Tso's Chicken. There appraently is a real General Tso (Tsao) who lived in the early 1800's though no one knows how his name got connected to the dish. My guess is that Geheral Tso's chicken is American in origin. Sweet and sour sauce isn't that common in real Chinese food.
General Mo's chicken though does bear a suspicious resemblance to General Tso's chicken. Part of the joke is that General Tso's chicken is found in Chinese restaurants outside China, but rarely if ever in China.
